Burgess and Allen

Burgess & Allen are a musical duo made up of Gill Allen on acoustic guitar and vocals and Simon Burgess on guitar, banjo, vocals. Based in the Horowhenua region of New Zealand, with a repertoire of carefully chosen covers and originals, from ballads to blues the two bring a magical blend of rhythmical guitar and memorable vocals to music styles.

Gill Allen was born and raised in southern England moving to New Zealand in 1985. Gill’s passion for music started on the piano at age 9 and she later adopted the guitar for song writing & performance. She embraces a variety of music styles and more recently has gained a love of folk and bluegrass since the coming together of “Burgess & Allen”. Gill completed work on her debut album ‘Colour Outside the Lines’ at the end of 2014. Her compositions are a crafted blend of expressive soft rock and stirring ballads; the cover and booklet are self designed, reflecting her professional art training and her love of painting. Gill is currently working on her second album “Crystal in the Breeze” for planned release in 2018.

At home Simon teaches music and has enjoyed making music around the world for the last 40 years. With a degree in jazz composition he also plays guitar, trombone, accordion, banjo, mandolin and has played and led multiple musical formations including jazz big bands, dance bands, choir, tango and world music groups. He has sung both as a soloist and with many bands and ensembles over the years. With both headline and support roles as guest at Folk Festivals and concerts his multi instrumental skills have been in demand on stage and recording for other writers and performers. He has performed on stage with Winnie Winston, Colleen Trenwith and Bayou Seco (USA). IN 2008 he formed the Gypsy Group Tandrom Trio and in 2014 performed at WOMAD New Plymouth and World of Wearable Art with the Balkanistas in Wellington, NZ

…”Your songs and musical performance certainly met the committee’s expectations and we were thrilled to have you perform for us. Hoping to hear more of this lovely combination…” D. Webb. Chairperson. Levin Folk Music Inc.
